The Apple That Keeps Missing

This is a playground about a big idea called T Theory. The idea sounds strange at first: there is no clock hiding inside the universe. Nothing anywhere is "keeping time." Instead, everything counts — and the biggest, best example is why things fall. So we are going to throw an apple. Hard.

Think about what you do when you "measure time." You count something. Your heart goes thump, thump, thump. A clock goes tick, tick, tick. The Earth goes around the Sun — one birthday, two birthdays, three. Every single "time" you have ever measured was really a count of something that repeats.

What if that's all there is? Not a river of time flowing along — just trillions of things, each counting its own beats, and us comparing the counts?

That is T Theory's whole trick. It never says the universe is wrong — it says the universe never needed the extra part. Take any rule from a physics book, cross out "seconds," write "beats," and the rule still works. This page plays that game with the most famous rule of all: gravity.

Every tiny piece of the world keeps a beat

Scientists found out something amazing about a hundred years ago: every particle — every electron, every atom — behaves like a tiny drummer with its own steady beat. Heavier particles drum faster. That's what mass is, in this reading: how fast your drum beats. A single electron drums about 120,000,000,000,000,000,000 times while your heart beats once. You are a walking orchestra of drummers so fast you hear them as one smooth note — and you call that note "time."

Here is the secret that makes gravity work. Put one drummer on a mountain and one in a deep valley, close to the heavy Earth. Their drums start together — but the valley drum falls behind. Not because it's broken. Because near heavy things, all counting runs slower. Every drum, every atom, every heart. Watch:

At one special speed, the apple falls and falls and never lands — because the ground keeps curving away exactly as fast as the apple drops toward it. It keeps missing. That is all an orbit is.

The Moon? The Moon is a giant apple that has been missing the Earth for four billion years. The space station? Apples with astronauts inside, missing the ground sixteen times a day. Nothing up there floats — everything up there falls, and keeps missing.

The real magic speed just above the air is about 7.7 kilometres each second-worth of beats — twenty times faster than a jet plane. Rockets don't mostly fly up. They fly sideways, to reach the missing-speed. Up is easy. Sideways is the hard part.

Nothing pulls the apple

Old picture: the Earth grabs the apple with an invisible hand and yanks it down. T Theory's picture: remember the slow drums. The side of the apple closer to the Earth counts a tiny bit slower than the side away from it. And anything that walks with one slow side and one fast side will turn toward the slow side — the way you'd veer if one of your shoes stuck to the floor a little on every step.

So the apple isn't pulled. The apple is just walking through its own counting, and the counting is thinner near the ground — so its path bends down. Falling is leaning toward where the drums beat slow. That's the whole trick. And because every drummer leans the same way — apples, feathers, astronauts, light itself — everything falls together. Gravity treats everyone exactly alike, because gravity isn't a hand that grabs things. It's the counting itself, running slower near the heavy.

WHAT'S REAL, WHAT'S A READING

Real, measured, in every textbook: the particle beat (ν = mc²∕h, de Broglie 1924); clocks running slower near mass (Pound–Rebka 1959, down to one millimetre at NIST 2022; the GPS correction of ~38 μs/day, running for four decades); Newton's cannonball becoming an orbit near 7.7 km/s just above the atmosphere; the apple game on this page integrates real gravity around a round Earth — no cartoons in the arithmetic.

The reading: T Theory re-reads these same equations with the time variable replaced by counts compared to counts — mass as tempo, gravity as the thinning of the counting, falling as following the gradient of your own count. No equation is altered and no prediction changes; that is the point, and the honest limit.
