In 1970 Conway showed that a grid of squares and three rules could grow gliders, guns and whole machines — a universe from almost nothing. This page runs the counted version, in 3D. The boxes hold numbers — tempi, the drums of the other pages. Space keeps spawning new boxes between old ones. And one rule holds the picture together: the sum must never change. Out of that single piece of bookkeeping fall three things at once: expansion, grouping, and the slow regions you know as gravity. No t anywhere — a tick here is not a time. It is one pass of the render, one conservation check, counted.
The seven-layered unfolding casts reality from the Unified State quanta by quanta — as if tick by tick. Whatever is added must not break the picture. So every tick pays for itself: the sum is checked, the sum is kept, and where there is more to keep, the keeping costs more ticks. That cost is the slowness. The slowness is what you have been calling gravity.
Conway needed three rules. This machine needs five — and only R·03 does any real work; the rest is stage direction. Each rule is the cartoon of something measured, and § 04 names which. The two benches below run nothing else.
The smallest possible universe: two boxes, side by side, each holding a number. Watch the whole engine in slow motion. The spawn lands between them — the sum spreads across three — the render gathers it back into two before the next spawn lands — and the cycle closes, the sum untouched from first frame to last. Step it by hand if you want to catch the books mid-count: the one number that never moves is the copper one.
Now a real lattice — hundreds of boxes, and two neighborhoods in it. On the left, the cluster: numbers piled together, the way matter piles. On the right, the void: almost nothing. The same render passes over both, and in both the spawn keeps landing and the sum keeps being kept. But the cluster has more sum to keep — more merges to pay per pass — so watch the two tick counters: the cluster's own count falls behind the void's, further every second. No force was added to this page. Only bookkeeping. Pile the numbers higher and watch its counting thin — this is the drums of the kids' page, the thinned count of the Orrery, arriving from underneath.
Conservation, checked in every interaction ever recorded and never once seen broken. Expansion, measured since 1929 and accelerating — new "track" appearing between things that do not themselves move. Bound systems riding the flow without stretching: atoms, orbits, galaxies hold their size while the space between galaxy clusters grows. Clocks in deeper potentials running slow, from 22.5 m (Pound–Rebka 1959) to one millimetre (NIST 2022) to the GPS ledger balanced daily. And the precedent: Conway 1970 — simple local rules on a lattice generating worlds is mathematics, not metaphor.
Reality cast from the Unified State, rendered quanta by quanta through the seven-layered unfolding — a tick not as a time but as one conservation check, counted. The box's number is the tempo of the drums. The spawn is expansion. The merge is binding. And gravity is the cost of the books: the region that carries more number pays more of every pass keeping its sum, so its own counting thins — things lean toward the thin count, as the other instruments show.
No equation is altered by the reading; this page is the mechanism-picture. The measured curves live in the Orrery and the Bridge, where they land on the laboratory record.
This lattice is a cartoon and says so: nothing here derives the relativistic factor — the toy's lapse falls as 1∕(1+load), the measured lapse as √(1−rs∕r); direction true, curve not. Spawn timing is randomized for the eye; the corpus's real spawn statistics — the horizon at which spawning outruns any traveler — are a separate publication. The S∕3 split is the simplest conserving choice, not a derived one. The seven layers are named, not shown; this page runs one.
The sum. One verified non-conserving event — energy created or destroyed in a closed books — and R·03 falls, and with it the entire premise that the render keeps anything. No such event is on record, anywhere, ever.
The merge. One bound system observed stretching with the Hubble flow — one atom, one orbit, one galaxy inflating with the space it rides — and R·04 falls: regathering would not be winning locally, and the cycle of § 02 would be false.
The cost. One clock in the deeper potential found running fast — one valley beating its mountain — and R·05 falls, and § 03 with it. Four decades of flying clocks say otherwise, to parts in a hundred thousand.
The standing flag — a cartoon is not a derivation. This page predicts nothing and derives nothing: it re-tells measured physics as bookkeeping, with the curve knowingly wrong in the toy. It becomes more than a picture only if the counting is someday made to yield the measured lapse from the rules alone — S∕3, spawn statistics and all. Until that day this flag stays raised, at the same volume as the claims: the Render is the engine-room story; the Orrery and the Bridge are the numbers.
