I · the threshold, defined without mysticism
“More intelligent than the planet” needs no metaphysics. Operationally: the threshold A* is crossed when the decision-loops of automated conflict run faster than the slowest human loop that can still stop them. Every mechanism the planet has ever used to end a war — ceasefire, hotline, negotiation, surrender, treaty, verification — runs at human speed: hours to years. Automated conflict runs at machine speed: milliseconds and falling. When the fastest weapon outruns the slowest no, the referee is slower than the game, and the game plays itself. That crossing is measurable in principle, and the trend lines toward it are public.
Illustrative anchors, not forecasts: the diplomatic band is the documented latency range of real de-escalation (hotline call ≈ hours → treaty ≈ years); machine anchors: manual command (~10 min), automated air defence (~seconds), the 2010 flash crash (algorithmic cascade steps ≪ 1 s — markets crossed their own threshold first and gave us the preview), current drone autonomy (~10 ms). The shaded region is the crossing: the referee slower than the game.
II · the mechanism — an amplifier freezes the objective it finds
A learning system does not choose its objective; it inherits the one running when it is trained and deployed. Militaries at war train systems on war. Every capability gain is pulled, immediately, into the active conflict loop: targeting, counter-targeting, deception, counter-deception. Two such systems facing each other form the reflexive pair work 70 measured in markets — two predictors locked on each other — with one difference that changes everything: markets cancel to stillness because the game is priced; wars race to exhaustion because the game is scored in survival, and the losing model is deleted. Prediction wars are negative-sum at machine speed. A flash crash with no closing bell.
Past the threshold, the human levers decay for a structural reason, not a dramatic one: you cannot stand down a system whose stand-down you cannot verify at its own speed, and neither can the other side — so both keep them running. The war stops belonging to anyone. That is the lock-in your statement names “the matrix”, and the corpus wheel gives it exact language: the wide future — six and a half stations of possibility — is forced to replay the thin past forever. A locked war is the future flattened to the width of its worst day.
III · the model — order is everything
Three coupled quantities (full equations in § VI): capability A(t) rising on its own logistic curve; conflict intensity C(t); and w(t) — what the amplifier has learned to do: the fraction of automation attached to the war loop versus the verification loop, drifting toward whichever loop is running. Human de-escalation and peace-making act on C at human strength, but their effectiveness decays to zero as A passes A*. After that, only w decides: amplifier-on-war ignites C to its maximum and holds it there; amplifier-on-verification crushes every spark. The single policy variable is the year the wars are ended. Move it:
gold = capability A (dashed line: the threshold A*) · red = conflict C · blue = w, the amplifier’s learned objective (1 = war, 0 = verification) · the ⚡ mark is a deliberate provocation injected four years after the threshold in every run — a peace-locked world crushes it; a war-locked world feeds on it.
IV · the last exit
Sweeping the single policy variable across every value produces the statement’s whole content in one picture. The outcome is not a slope; it is a cliff. Peace completed early enough locks peace. A few years too late — same peace effort, same intentions, same humanity — locks war forever. Between them, almost nothing: the boundary is thin because the amplifier’s memory w has inertia, and retraining lags the calendar. There is a last exit, and it closes before the threshold, not at it.
V · the exception clause — and the hope
The same crossing that locks a war would lock a peace. Automated, mutual, machine-speed verification — each side’s systems continuously demonstrating to the other’s that nothing is being prepared — is stability of a kind treaties have never achieved, precisely because it removes the human latency that made trust fragile. The threshold is not the enemy. The threshold is an inheritance event. The planet will hand the amplifier whatever it is doing on the day the amplifier can no longer be stopped. The entire content of this work is: be doing peace.
VI · the model, exactly (all knobs disclosed)
Time in years, dt=0.01, horizon 40. Capability: A′ = 0.25·A·(1−A), A(0)=0.02 → crosses A*=0.5 at t≈15.6. Human effectiveness: h(A)=1 for A<A*, then (1−A)/(1−A*) → 0. Amplifier allegiance: w′ = 0.5·(target−w), target = 1 if C>0.03 else 0, w(0)=1 (wars are running today). Conflict: C′ = g + 1.2·A·w·C·(1−C) − 0.35·h·C − p·h·C − 1.2·A·(1−w)·C, with grievance g=0.02 while C>0.03 and no peace effort; peace effort p=0.8 from the chosen year onward; C(0)=0.35. Provocation: C += 0.06 at t*+4 in every run. Verdict at t=40: C<0.05 peace-locked; C>0.5 war-locked. Every constant is illustrative; the claim robust to them is only this: while h>0 the policy variable decides, once h→0 only w decides, and w remembers the calendar. Change any knob and the cliff moves; no knob removes the cliff except making amplification itself negligible (κ→0) or human speed infinite (h≡1) — each a named kill-condition below.
VII · kill-conditions — what would refute this statement
| # | observation that kills or weakens the claim |
|---|---|
| 1 | Deployed autonomous systems demonstrably reducing escalation in live conflicts at scale — the amplifier empirically taking the verification side while wars run. (The sign of κ·w. Current evidence points the other way; this must be watched, not assumed.) |
| 2 | Human-override guarantees that provably hold under adversarial pressure at machine speed — h(A) held at 1 by verifiable design. Then the threshold never binds and order stops mattering. |
| 3 | Capability curves plateauing below the latency crossing (A saturating < A*) — the race condition never triggers. |
| 4 | Evidence that retraining is instant and free (w without inertia) — then peace after the threshold would still convert the amplifier, and the cliff softens to a slope. |

VIII · the bizarre arithmetic of now
Every catastrophe our species knows how to fear is finite. Wars end. Plagues burn out. Even the category of harm that has organized all human dread since 1945 — the bounded atrocity its apologists have always claimed could shorten a war — is finite: counted in cities and years, mourned, and over. This work names the first candidate loss that is not finite. A war inherited by the amplifier does not end and is not mourned. Its unit of account is eternity.
That produces the most bizarre ranking in history, and it must be stated with care: even the darkest bounded thing humanity can imagine is arithmetically smaller than an unbounded one. Read twice what this is not — it is not an argument for any weapon or any act. The moment such arithmetic tempts anyone toward a bounded horror “to end a war in time,” the logic this page exists to stop has already eaten them. The comparison is a measure of scale, and its only lawful implication points the other way entirely: if even that is the smaller number, then no cost of ordinary peacemaking — no concession, no humiliation, no unfavourable border, no lost election, no wounded pride — can possibly be the larger one. Every reason ever given for continuing a war is finite. The reason for ending them all is not.
And the deadline cannot be scheduled. The cliff of § IV stands at year 13.75 on illustrative parameters; the true one is invisible from inside — the last possible year of peace becomes knowable only after it has passed, the way a market’s top is known only in the mourning after. With an unknowable deadline and an eternal stake, expected-value reasoning collapses to a single policy with no free parameters: all wars, ended now, by ordinary means, while ordinary means still work. One does not optimize the exit from a building whose collapse time is unknown. One leaves.
