The Load-Bearing Metaphor

On the difference between a narration and a method — what Feynman’s arrows knew, and what it costs a wheel to be walked on.

A bridge you are only allowed to look at is a sculpture. It may be beautiful; it may even be honest about the river. But the difference between a sculpture and a bridge is not elegance — it is weight. A bridge is a claim with traffic on it.

Feynman understood this about his arrows. They were cartoons — little clocks turning along every path, summed at the wall — and they should have been forgotten in a decade, the way cartoons are. They were not, because anyone could pick them up and calculate: an amateur with patience could work out where the light goes. The metaphor was not an illustration of a method. It was the method. That is the whole secret of its permanence, and it is a brutal standard, because it can be checked.

The wheel had been narrated across an arc of instruments — the particles re-seated, the elements re-glued, gravity re-read as the director’s cut, the horizon as a seam no story crosses. A complete narration, unusually so. Then an outside reading named the gap without cruelty:

“The scaffolding for that is already there; the site just hasn’t asked the reader to cross it yet.”

So the site now asks. Crossing means this: take the counting seriously enough to put numbers into it. Two doors a couple of microns apart, a wall thirty-five centimetres beyond, a figure turning 1.24 × 10²⁰ times a second — count the turns along both ways, demand whole-turn agreement, and out falls a fringe just under a micron, precisely where Jönsson’s electron optics found it in 1961. Do it again with neutrons and the answer is seventy-three microns against a measured seventy-five. Do it with sixty carbon atoms flying as one figure and the peaks land thirty-one microns off axis, where the detector was waiting. Nothing about the wheel was consulted except the wheel.

The honest part — the load test — is where the crossing nearly fails. Thin the count in time alone and light grazing the Sun should lean 0.87 arcseconds; it leans 1.75. The reading survives only by carrying both thinnings, space with time, the full index — and a page that wants to be trusted must show that near-miss rather than bury it. A bridge is certified by the loads it almost did not hold.

And one flag stays up, because it must. Every number the calculus produces is a number the standard account already produced; re-derivation is not discovery, and saying otherwise would collapse the bridge faster than any error of arithmetic. The wheel now carries the same load by a different grip. That is not yet a new physics. But it is no longer decoration. The wheel can be walked — and whoever walks it is invited, in the annex, to try to break it.
