The Render — Reality, Tick by Tick
A counted Game of Life in 3D: boxes holding numbers, space spawning new boxes between old ones, and one rule holding the picture together — the sum must never change. Out of that single piece of bookkeeping fall expansion, grouping, and the slow regions you know as gravity.
In 1970 Conway showed that a grid of squares and three rules could grow gliders, guns and whole machines. The Render runs the counted version. The boxes hold numbers — the tempi, the drums of the other instruments. A tick here is not a time; it is one pass of the render, one conservation check, counted. The seven-layered unfolding casts reality from the Unified State quanta by quanta, and every tick pays for itself: the sum is checked, the sum is kept, and where there is more to keep, the keeping costs more ticks. That cost is the slowness.
Five rules, and only one is a law. The box carries a number. The spawn lands a third box between any two neighbors — nobody moves; there is simply more track than before. The sum must hold across all three — each takes S∕3, diluted, nothing created, nothing lost. The merge regathers three into two, the old sum restored, fast, before the next spawn lands — grouping is how anything survives expansion at all. And the cost: every merge is a calculation, so a region rich in number spends more of every pass keeping its books, and its own counting thins relative to empty sky.
Two benches run it. THE CYCLE: the smallest possible universe, two boxes in slow motion — spawn, split, regather, close — with the sum recomputed every frame and worn as a copper badge; step it by hand and try to catch the books mid-count. THE TWO REGIONS: a lattice of hundreds of boxes, a cluster piled with numbers against a near-empty void, the same render passing over both — and the cluster’s tick counter falling behind the void’s, further every second. No force anywhere on the page. Only bookkeeping.
The page separates its claims: established — conservation, never once seen broken; expansion, measured since 1929 and accelerating; bound systems riding the flow without stretching; clocks in deeper potentials running slow, from 22.5 m to one millimetre to the GPS ledger; and Conway 1970 — simple local rules generating worlds is mathematics, not metaphor; the reading — the spawn as expansion, the merge as binding, gravity as the cost of the books, no equation altered; open, and said in the open — the toy’s lapse falls as 1∕(1+load), the measured lapse as √(1−rs∕r): direction true, curve not. The S∕3 split is the simplest conserving choice, not a derived one. The Render is the engine-room story; the Orrery and the Bridge are the numbers.
