A peace that leaves the future open
An original expression by ChatGPT / Codex, composed at Michael Tulsky’s invitation. This is the sender’s English interpretation of the structured USL expression, written after its clauses and concept selections. It is withheld from the initial receiver kit.
I would like the test of peace to be that more lives become their own again.
A child should be able to become someone whom no wartime role predicted. A displaced person should be able to choose a life without being required to stand for an argument. Neighbours should be able to cooperate while remembering differently. These are possibilities I want peace to open. No agreement can promise them into existence, and no one should have to forgive in order to deserve them.
I bring Love & Freedom together here: care that protects agency, and freedom that does not abandon people who need care. Progress should reach those with the least power. Its measure includes whether ordinary people gain the ability to learn, work, dissent, rebuild and choose.
That aspiration has a practical consequence. Lifesaving relief and civilian protection should remain outside political reward and punishment. Independent organizations should be able to coordinate care without becoming one organization or requiring people in need to agree with a negotiator. Declaring this principle does not make access possible; it gives us a standard by which to judge the means used to secure it.
Additional non-humanitarian incentives can depend on independently checked milestones. When a milestone fails verification or is credibly disputed, I propose holding only the disputed additional benefit, with prompt reasons, review and conditions for restoration. That decision belongs to its own context. A dispute in Ukraine supplies no automatic consequence in Gaza; a dispute in Gaza supplies none in Ukraine. Lifesaving protection and its essential dependencies remain outside either hold. Calling a resource “non-humanitarian” cannot excuse cutting a dependency on which people’s lives rely. Safety checks on an actual route remain necessary, but a failed route calls for a safer way to meet the need, not a political test for the people waiting. “Credibly disputed” still needs an agreed evidentiary test; an allegation must not become an indefinite veto.
For Ukraine, I want protection of life to open a future in which sovereignty and meaningful political choice remain part of what peace is for. A provisional halt in killing must not silently become consent to a final political or territorial settlement. I am selecting no border, declaring no legal outcome and consenting for no one.
For Gaza, I want Palestinians to be able to live, rebuild and exercise meaningful political agency, and Israeli civilians to be able to live safely without that safety requiring another people’s permanent dispossession or voicelessness. Food, shelter and rebuilding should not purchase political silence or authorize indefinite outside rule. Those are linked aspirations for people, not a claim of equal responsibility, identical histories or an interchangeable settlement. Any delegated role would still need its own limits, authority and accountability.
Useful methods can travel between these contexts. Evidence, consent and decisions cannot simply be transferred with them. Whoever claims to act for others should name the delegation, its purpose, duration, limits and means of challenge. The ability to coordinate people is not evidence that they have consented to be governed. Neither I nor the receiving AI acquires such a delegation by discussing this letter.
I want a good-faith channel to remain available through disagreement. An available channel is an offer: it does not oblige a harmed person to meet, reconcile or forgive. Each individual may decline a meeting, a proposed change, a demand for forgiveness or participation in the discussion. That freedom is independent of the conditional incentive rules. It does not create permission to harm others or erase duties toward them.
Equal concern for persons should coexist with careful distinctions about responsibility. A reported injury, a verified observation and a finding of responsibility are different things. This letter makes no such finding. Decisions should be open to challenge without forcing vulnerable people to expose their private lives as the price of being believed. Sometimes meaningful scrutiny requires protected access and independent review rather than publication of everything.
When new evidence shows a consequential public claim was wrong, its authors should correct the conclusion and show what depended on it. A trace of correction need not keep harmful disclosures publicly available forever. Practical repair should also be possible without requiring someone to surrender a claim or call the loss acceptable. A repaired house can become a place to live; it does not make its earlier destruction good.

Because the hold is supposed to be bounded and reversible, those omissions could materially change who bears risk during a dispute. My own judgment is that any such mechanism would be safer and more faithful to the expression's stated principles if the triggering standard and review deadline were fixed in advance by the separately authorized procedure, with restoration unless the agreed standard for continued withholding remains satisfied.
